The Sienna Dress

As it has been quite a hectic first week back at school, I have decided to show one of my makes I made during the summer. Yet again it is another Simple Sew pattern!

I am a big fan of the Simple Sew patterns as I really like the modern silhouettes, however I can’t say the same for the instructions. The instructions are sometimes a little bit too simple! Yes, I know the purpose of the patterns is to have quick easy to follow instructions with limited pattern pieces, however sometimes it is nice to have detailed instructions that are fail safe.

Although the instructions were not great, I really like how the dress turned out. I used a floral linen mix material from Fabric Land (Bristol shop), which was £5.99 pm, you can find it here online. The fabric is great quality and has a nice little bit of stretch to the width.

The dress has a lovely bodice shape. The shape of neckline is extremely flattering and not too low. In terms of the neckline, I didn’t made any adjustments. I cut the size 12 out and graded to a 14 at the waist. I did have to take in the seams at the back and shoulders (I have to do this with most patterns). In hindsight I should have cut out the 12 and made a FBA, but I think it works out fine :).

The bodice has two darts coming from the waist upwards and two across the bust,  I ended up pulling in a little of the waist dart to make it more of a snug fitting.

I followed the pattern instructions and lined the bodice. At first I was going to line the skirt aswell, however it ended up adding too much bulk to the bottom. I did add a good few inches to the length of the skirt, as I was a little too uncomfortable with how short the pattern looked!

Best parts of the dress:
Pockets! the dress comes with pockets (in both views). One of the things I love about sewing is that you can add pockets to dresses 🙂 IMG_2177

  • The neckline of the fabric, it has such a pretty outline which would look great in some lovely crepe material
  • The sizing was pretty spot on for me (although I could have done with a FBA)

The instructions could have been a little more detailed as they probable might be a little confusing for beginners. Saying that I did find the diagrams very useful.

I think it is such a lovely dress for the summer. I hope you like it as much as I do!
